A start-up connecting users to professionals in their desired field

Problem

Finding the right career path is challenging. The pandemic made it challenging for pre-med students to shadow credible professionals.

Solution

Develop short-form video content comprised of professionals answering key questions about their field experience. House the content on a searchable website with a cataloged inventory of the videos.

How might we create an organized platform to house a high volume of video content?

Role

As the Head of Design and User Experience, I led user interviews and the iterative site design process.

Competitive Analysis

After researching current sites driven dedicated to career advice, education and the medical profession, we found four direct competitors.

User Interviews

Participants were active pre-med students in search of a specialty to study in med school.

User Persona

Jen is a pre-med student with an interest in shadowing in dentistry or anesthesiology. She is eager to learn about day-to-day life and discover the challenges of each role.

Low-Fidelity Wireframe

The goal was to incorporate the desires after receiving input from user tests on the original site. We wanted a comprehensive catalog of videos.

Initial Wireframe

In 2020, our initial site was designed for Wix. The disadvantage to this was the lack of CMS capabilities.

Site Implementation

In 2021, we pivoted our site to Webflow for more customization and CMS capabilities.

Marketing

One of our TikTok videos from December of 2021 reached 1.1 million views and increased our traffic on the site to over 30,000 visitors and 1,000 subscribers. This achievement was incredibly motivating for our team and led us to make valuable connections.

Pivot

In the fall of 2022, we met with the developer of and made the challenging decision to migrate our content to their platform as our team took on new career paths.

Reflection

This was my first UX role and was incredibly valuable to my entrance into the field. I learned to remain patient and flexible as we made several site hosting transitions. I appreciated having a team to bounce ideas off of and really enjoyed the challenge of the rapid start-up pace. However, if I could do this project over, I would like to take more time to build out each phase of the site.
